Karate today is used as a generic term for most stand-up martial arts systems. Originally developed on the Island of Okinawa during the Ryukyu Kingdom (15th to 19th centuries), it was exported to mainland Japan in the 20th century. Karate is predominantly a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbows and open hand techniques to overcome and incapacitate an opponent.
We, at SCK, apply a scientific method of teaching using your body's natural reflexes and progressive resistance; along with proven martial arts techniques, to give you a solid base of self defense within the three primary ranges of combat (stand-up, clinch and ground). We do this by combining techniques from the proven combat disciplines of Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Krav Maga.
We also apply the scientific method of teaching to our kids class using their natural reflexes meshed with proven martial arts techniques to give them a practical, applicable self defense base. We couple this with the Play As the Way (P.A.W.)TM method of children's karate instruction so they have fun while learning!
Typically it takes between 5 - 7 years of dedicated, consistent training to attain the rank of black belt. Because we value the journey of creating knowledge and skill over belts we do not promote children under the age of 16 years old to black belt. SCK Karate is a proud affiliate of Tsuru-Ki Martial Arts under 5th degree black belt Master Stefano Cianelli, owner/head instructor at Tsuru-ki Martial Arts, Hainesport, NJ.
